Geography

Olive groves and a coastal slope

In Turkey, Arab Alevi settlement is mainly in Hatay (Samandağ, the Defne/Harbiye hinterland, around Antakya), Adana, and Mersin (central neighbourhoods, Karaduvar, Kazanlı, the Tarsus district). Historically it belongs to the mountain-and-plain belt of the coastal Levant.

Turkey has no official census by sect. The circulating range of about 0.5–1 million is an estimate. Communities on the Syrian coast are a separate geography.

Hatay Arabic (a Levantine dialect) is heard at home and in villages.
